Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs dies aged 27

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs has died aged 27, the team announced Monday.  

‘It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas,’ a statement from the Angels said. 

‘Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this devastating time.’

The Angels’ were set to play the Texas Rangers on Monday but the match up has been postponed, ESPN reported.

Skaggs pitched five innings Saturday during his final game at home against the Oakland Athletics.  

The native of Woodland Hills, California had gone 7-7 this year in 15 starts, recording a 4.29 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings. 

He was drafted by the Angels as the 40th pick in the first round in 2009 before heading to the Arizona Diamondbacks in August 2010. 

Skaggs made his NFL debut two years later and was traded back to the Angels in 2013. 

His death comes 10 years after another Angels pitcher, Nick Adenhart, was killed in a 2009 car crash.
