‘I looked toward the direction they were pointing and saw a man going under the water and struggling to stay afloat,’ Eden said.

Without concern for his own safety, he grabbed his surfboard and rushed into the water but could not find the man.

Eden eventually found himself caught in the same dangerous rip and separated from his surfboard.

‘I managed to get myself back to shore and sat there exhausted,’ he added.

Because of Eden’s efforts, emergency services were able to pinpoint the man’s location beneath the waves.

The swimmer, believed to be from Nepal, had remained under water for 10 minutes and was taken hospital. But doctors were unable to save his life.
