Gentleman Jack’s Lydia Leonard ‘set to play Cherie Blair in upcoming series of The Crown’ alongside Bertie Carvel as Tony Blair
Lydia Leonard is reportedly set to play Cherie Blair in the upcoming series of The Crown alongside Bertie Carvel as Tony Blair.
Series five of The Crown will be set in the 90s, and is set to follow Tony’s rise in popularity as a politician and ultimately becoming Prime Minister in 1997.
39-year-old Lydia’s role as the barrister has been reported by The Sun, with the much-anticipated season coming to screens in 2022.

MailOnline has contacted Netflix and Lydia’s representatives for further comment.
Lydia is most well known as the her role as Suranne Jones’ lesbian lover in Gentleman Jack.
Coincidentally, Bertie played Suranne’s husband in the BBC’s Doctor Foster, and he has experience playing British politicians after starring Nick Clegg in Coalition in 2015.
Lydia is joining a slew of stars set to join the new cast to ring in this new era.

Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth, with Claire Foy and Olivia Colman having gone before her.
Prince Philip will be played by Game of Thrones’ Jonathan Pryce while Princess Margaret is being played by Lesley Manville.
Olivia Williams will be playing Camilla Parker Bowles in the upcoming series.

Before Blair in the 90s, there was John Major who will be played by Jonny Lee Miller.
Elizabeth Debicki is Diana, Princess of Wales while her on-screen husband Prince Charles will be played by Dominic West.
The upcoming series will follow the lead up to and include the aftermath of Diana’s 1997 fatal car crash.

Writer Peter Morgan has been very clear that the episode will not show the actual crash.
Intriguingly, though, it will explore a different angle from the one depicted in the 2006 film The Queen, which starred Helen Mirren as the monarch and Michael Sheen as Blair.
‘We don’t want to go the same route as the film,’ an executive on the production confided to The Daily Mail.
‘There are aspects of the clash between the Queen and Blair that haven’t really been aired yet. It’s being so sensitively handled because of Diana’s sons — and the Queen . . . and Charles. Just making it is seen as controversial. And then we have to show it.’
