A car rolled onto its roof in a busy tunnel sparking commuter chaos with traffic backed up for 16km.

The vehicle was overturned after crashing into another car in the M5 tunnel near Bardwell Valley, in Sydney’s south, at 6.40am on Tuesday.

Traffic has backed up 16km with commuters warned of lengthy delays.

Two of the three eastbound lanes remain closed.

Drivers have been advised to reduce speeds to 40km/h.
