M5 East truck fire: Traffic chaos as blaze shuts down freeway at Kingsgrove, Sydney

  • Truck fire closed down most lanes of Sydney’s M5
  • Traffic was being diverted off the motorway

A truck fire has shut part of a busy Sydney motorway, sparking significant delays.

Emergency services were called to the blaze on the M5 East at Kingsgrove in the city’s south just before 11am Friday.

The motorway has been shut westbound at Kingsgrove Rd, with two city-bound lanes closed for 40 minutes as emergency services dealt with the incident.

‘Call came in at 10.53am [on the] southwestern motorway just west of Kingsgrove road,’ a spokesperson for NSW Fire and Rescue told Daily Mail Australia.

‘There was a fire in a truck, they’ve put it out… now they’re just decanting the fuel.’

All eastbound carriageways opened just before midday but the westbound lanes remained closed, with traffic diverted onto local suburban roads.

‘Traffic’s very slow both ways,’ warned NSW Traffic Alerts on X. ‘Continue to allow extra time & expect delays. Diversion still in place via King Georges Rd off-ramp.

‘The fire’s out [but] clean-up and salvage need to take place.’
