A major Sydney motorway has come to a grinding halt after a truck rolled over inside a tunnel blocking traffic travelling towards the city.

The incident occurred at about 11.30am on Tuesday when a truck rolled over in the eastbound lane near the tunnel entrance of the M5 motorway in Bexley North.

It’s understood the driver exited the vehicle after it crashed and escaped the wreckage with only minor injuries.

Motorists are being warned to allow extra travel time and to expect significant delays as eastbound lanes remain closed as emergency services work to clear the road.

The on-ramp from Kingsgrove Road to M5 Motorway also remains closed.

Traffic is heavy and drivers are advised to allow extra time for travel.

Citybound motorists are being diverted onto King Georges Road off-ramp to use D5 detour.

Motorists are also being urged to consider using the M8 instead.
