A young mother has died in a brutal alleged stabbing that left her toddler soaked in blood and shocked hardened police and emergency services.

Mackenzie ‘Max’ Anderson, 21, died outside her Mayfield unit after an ‘horrendous’ alleged domestic violence incident in Newcastle late on Friday, after being allegedly stabbed by her ex-boyfriend.

The ex-boyfriend is understood to have been released from jail only 16 days earlier for alleged domestic violence offences against her and was the subject of an apprehended violence order.

Police allege the 22-year-old assailant, who was arrested at the scene and is under police guard, broke into her home and attacked Ms Anderson.

The frightened young mum called police to report the break-in at her Crebert Street unit at 10.40pm but when police arrived they found her lying on the landing outside her with ‘significant injuries’.

She died at the scene despite desperate attempts by paramedics to save her. 

Police confirmed her son, 3, was found ‘covered in blood’ but was not injured.

Ms Anderson’s ex-partner is under police guard at John Hunter Hospital with a hand injury believed to be sustained during the incident. 

He is understood to not be the father of the child.

It is understood police intend to charge the man with murder. 

The grisly scene shocked first responders and left a seasoned senior police officer severely shaken, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Newcastle City Commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey confirmed the child at the scene was found ‘covered in blood’.

‘I’ve just spent the last 20 minutes or so viewing body worn footage and it was a horrendous scene, horrendous,’ he said.

Four ambulances and a specialist care team tried to save Ms Anderson but to no avail. 

‘Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District were called to a home unit on Crebert Street, Mayfield, about 10.40pm (Friday 25 March 2022), responding to reports a man had broken into the unit,’ a NSW Police statement read.

Ms Anderson’s shocked family began to pay tribute on Saturday.

‘We will love and miss you always beautiful girl … fly high gorgeous,’ said Naomi Anderson.

Superintendent Humphrey confirmed the child found at the scene was ‘unharmed’ and is now safe with relatives. 

He is understood to have been on parole after recently being released from prison.

She had recently taken out an apprehended violence order against her ex-partner.  

Newcastle police arrived at the unit to find the critically injured woman but she died at the scene.

‘Police arrived to find a 21-year-old woman critically injured lying outside her home. Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics rendered assistance but the woman died at the scene.

‘She had suffered a number of stab wounds.’ 

Police initiated ‘strike force slant’ to investigate her death and the circumstances.
