Maggots in kitchen appliances: Woman’s grim discovery after leaving her blender for 24 hours

A woman was horrified after discovering maggots inside her blender just 24 hours after using it.

Niki Detrich, from Los Angeles, was trying to make breakfast when suspicious movement caught her eye.

The woman was shocked to find the larvae crawling on her blender blades and around the rim of the base.

She admitted to only rinsing her blender out with hot water after each use – and using soap every third day.

An infestation can cause serious health problems, including salmonella, E. coli, Myiasis, and intestine and mouth issues.

‘I had the most traumatic thing happen to me today and, I need to do a quick PSA (public service announcement),’ she said in a video.

‘Whenever I use my blender, I immediately rinse out my blades with hot water, and I’ll scrub it out with soap every three uses.’

‘I use it everyday and hot water usually gets all the crud off, so why do I need soap every time?’

But Niki soon discovered the error of her ways.

‘I really do need to use soap when I’m cleaning these things,’ she said.

She revealed a video which recorded small larvae crawling around the grooves of her blender.

I had maggots in my blender blades – probably because I don’t really wash them out. I think they’re fruit fly larvae that laid eggs there.’

Niki admitted that her laziness was largely due to a design flaw with the blender.

In a follow up video, she explained that the blender functioned like a Nutribullet where the blades were attached to the base and cup could be screwed on to the top.

‘I can’t unscrew the blades to clean it,’ she said about her Beast Health Blender.

‘The actual cups can go in he top rack of the dishwasher – but I cannot put [the part with the blades] in because it’s mechanical.’

The woman then showed a close up of the base, which revealed that she could not take it apart.

‘I’ve obviously washed this since [I found maggots in them] – but there’s no way to actually detach it.’

‘The best I can do is clean down in these grooves.’

Are maggots dangerous?

* Maggots are the larvae of winged insects, most commonly flies.

* Flies lay their eggs on decaying matter, and the eggs turn into larvae within 2 hours

* Accidentally ingesting maggot infested food or water can pose serious health problems

* Flies carry bacteria and can transmit the bacteria to the surface they lay their larvae on

* A maggot infestation can cause salmonella, E. coli, Myiasis and intestine and mouth issues

Niki admitted she hadn’t used the blender since the ‘traumatic event’ – but she does not want to throw it away.

Many blamed the company for not making their devices easier to clean.

‘Manufacturers need to make blenders more accessible for cleaning.’

‘That’s definitely a design flaw.’

Others shared simple ways they clean their blenders.

‘I use a baby bottle brush to clean into the grooves,’ one woman said.

‘Add dishwashing liquid, ice, and a little bit of water – then blend it and rinse.’

But Niki is not the first woman to find maggots where they shouldn’t be.

An Aussie mum has issued a serious warning to all coffee machine owners after she made a ‘gross’ discovery following a trip away.

The Sydney woman went on a four day holiday with her family and forgot to empty the coffee machine drip tray before leaving.

She was shocked to find maggots in the water and crevices of the machine when she returned – and she still can’t get rid of them.

‘This is proper gross,’ the mum said when she shared her warning to a popular Facebook cleaning group.

‘We didn’t empty the coffee machine drip tray before going away for 4 days. Upon return, there were maggots in the water.’

The horrified mum said that despite her best attempts to clean the machine, there are still maggots moving around in hard to reach spots beneath the drip tray.

‘I emptied the drip tray and it’s in the dishwasher but I can see a maggot (and I’m sure there’s more) in parts I can’t get to,’ she said.

She asked cleaning enthusiasts what the best thing to do is.

‘What can I do? I’m so grossed out. It’s not a cheap machine, so I don’t want to chuck it,’ she said.

Surprisingly, many people took the situation in their stride and recommended not doing anything and letting the maggots turn into flies and flying away.

‘As gross as it is, wait for them to turn into flies and they’ll crawl out,’ one woman said.

‘I wouldn’t worry to be honest. Flush some hot water through before drinking it, but the maggots would only be in and around the dirty water tray. In a day or two any larvae you haven’t found yet will have either died or grown into flies anyway,’ another wrote.

Many people advised the mum to deep clean her machine, whilst other thought the maggots would turn into flies and leave of their own accord

Several people recommended regularly cleaning the machine and drip tray, and giving the machine a deep clean.

‘You will be fine. Get a descaling solution through it. The run just boiling water will 100 per cent kill all the bacteria,’ one woman said.

Another person said they would dissemble the machine themselves to get the maggots, or get it professionally serviced.

Many people shared their own horror stories.

‘I went to change the filter in my coffee machine and opened the back compartment to find a floating cockroach. So we had been drinking roach juice in our coffee for god knows how long!’ one woman said.

‘I had a maggot in the little viewing window of my bread machine for 20 years until it died (the machine that is!)’ another wrote.
