Major bakery chain shuts nine shops across the country – check to see if your local branch is on the list

  • The closures come following an ‘in-depth review’ of the business

A major bakery chain has shut nine shops across the country without warning – check to see if your local branch is on the list.

The business, which was founded in Scarborough, North Yorkshire in 1885, has permanently closed nine of their stores after it had announced that it was ‘making some changes to both our retail and bakery operations’ following an ‘in-depth review’ of the business.

The locations of the nine branches include Scarborough, Berwick Hills, Skelton and Great Ayton in North Yorkshire.

These closures follow the closing down of their stores in Lincoln including Woodhall Drive, The Hykeham Green Shopping Centre, Alford and Sleaford, and Houghton in Sunderland.

A Cooplands spokesperson said: ‘Following an in-depth review of the business, we are making some changes to both our retail and bakery operations, to help better position the business for the long-term and sustainable growth.

‘This has been done to ensure that our store estate and broader business are fully aligned with our ‘modern bakery food-to-go retailer’ strategy.’

Coopland, which has been described by reviewers as ”Britain’s cheapest breakfast”, and is the UK’s second-largest bakery chain behind Greggs.

They currently operate three production sites in Scarborough, Durham, and Hull which make a range of baked goods and deliver them to its shops daily.

It has over 160 bakeries and 12 cafes across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and the North East.
