Major update on newborn baby found abandoned in garage in Melbourne

A young mother accused of abandoning her unconscious newborn baby in the driveway of a home has been charged by child abuse detectives.

The little boy was discovered in a critical condition on the driveway of a home in Dandenong North in Melbourne’s southeast at 2.40am on Friday.

His mother, 25, has been charged with endangering life and recklessly causing injury by detectives from the Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse.

She has been bailed to face Dandenong Magistrates Court on December 5.

The baby remains in hospital but his condition is said to have improved.

It comes after shocked housemates of the young mother revealed on Friday they didn’t know she had been pregnant.

‘We didn’t know she was pregnant because we’ve only known her for three weeks, and we do back-to-back shifts, so we don’t get to see each other,’ one said.

‘We just woke up and there was an incident and we had to call triple-zero, and they came and helped us.

‘We are happy that the baby is okay, and we are still praying for her and the baby.

‘We are ready to support her when she gets out of hospital.’

The housemate added the mother was a ‘lovely woman’ who worked in aged care.

A single-storey home that appeared to have been recently sold was surrounded by police tape on Friday as officers visited the scene.
