A popular beach was forced to close after a suspicious package containing white powder washed up on shore.  

The 10kg haul was found at Malabar Beach in Sydney’s east on Saturday morning by a 27-year-old man scouring the sand with his metal detector. 

Police were called to the scene and closed off a section of the beach as they investigated the package.

‘There were two police officers there for a little bit and then more joined them and then the chopper came,’ witness Jake O’Flynn told Nine News.

‘It was pretty obvious to me what it was … there were definitely a few kilos in it, you could blatantly see that there were individual packages inside it.’ 

NSW Police confirmed to Daily Mail Australia that investigations are ongoing.

‘The package will be forensically examined,’ a spokesman said.

‘The matter has been referred to the State Crime Command and inquiries are continuing.’
