Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and his wife Lucy have been spotted celebrating with Sydney at the 40th Mardi Gras parade.

The couple made an appearance on Oxford Street after the Dykes on Bikes and Boys on Bikes kicked off the evening’s festivities.

Mr Turnbull described the parade as a ‘wonderful part of Sydney’ as he posted a selfie with Cher to social media.

‘Welcome to Sydney, Cher!’ he added in the caption to the photo of himself, Cher, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Lucy Turnbull.

Rumours were confirmed early on Saturday night when the gay icon arrived to the tune of Turn Back Time.

The singer sported a bright orange hair and low-cut black top with a silver-embroided jacket as she mingled with fans.

‘It was like the nation gave same sex couples an enormous hug,’ he said.

‘It was a vote for equality, a vote for respect and what a huge vote it was.’

The 40th Mardi Gras is expected to attract a record crowd of half a million people, while 1000 police patrol the event.
