Mother-of-two Chantel Mila, better known as Mama Mila, soaks the racks on an old towel with laundry detergent in her bathtub overnight.
The Melbourne mum, who is popular on TiKTok for her handy tips, said grease and dirt will ‘flake off’ easily the next morning which is perfect as she ‘hates’ scrubbing oven racks.

Chantel soaks the racks on an old towel in her bathtub overnight with laundry detergent. She said grease and dirt will flake off easily the next morning, which is perfect for her as she absolutely ‘hates’ scrubbing oven racks
‘If you’re anything like me and hate cleaning oven racks, this trick will save you so much scrubbing,’ she said on TikTok.
The mum instructed her followers to lay an old towel down on the base of your bathtub or in a big sink.
The towel prevents the oven racks causing a build up of grime on the tub or sink.
She then said to put the racks on top of the towel, cover them in hot water, add one scoop of laundry powder and leave it to soak overnight.
Before and after: Chantel explained that laundry detergent ‘melts off’ the burnt grease. The oven racks look brand new (right) after soaking with the detergent overnight
‘In the morning the burnt on mess just flakes off with a wipe and you’re left with shining oven racks,’ she explained.
Many of Chantel’s followers were curious why she used laundry detergent instead of dishwashing soap, but she explained that the detergent ‘melts off’ the burnt grease.
One mum was worried laundry detergent remnants on the racks would make her oven smell and effect the taste of the food.
However, Chantel advised her to rinse the oven rack before replacing it back in the oven.
Most of her followers loved the trick and tried it out for themselves.
‘Yes it really works. I just used the soapy water from my washing machine and let them soak overnight in the laundry sink. Amazingly easy,’ one woman said.
‘It works so well. No more harsh smelly chemicals or elbow grease,’ another agreed.
‘This works! Thank you. Love your tips,’ another wrote.
