Man 22, arrested following fatal stabbing in Crawley park

An in his 60s man was stabbed to death in a children’s adventure playground today, sparking a murder investigation.

The victim, who has not been formally named, died at the popular park in Crawley, West Sussex.

Paramedics and an air ambulance crew spent an hour trying to save the man’s life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police erected a cordon around the park in Crawley, West Sussex, and white-suited forensic experts were combing the area for clues as to why and how the attack happened.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said a 22-year-old had bee arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and was in custody awaiting interview by detectives.

The attack happened at Cherry Lane adventure playground, in Cherry Lane, Crawley at 10.30am today.

The spokesman said: ‘Police are investigating an incident at a children’s play area in Crawley. At about 10.30am, officers received a report of a stabbing at Cherry Lane adventure playground.

‘Shortly afterwards, a man was arrested nearby in connection with the incident.

‘The victim, a man believed to be in his 60s, was treated by paramedics for serious injuries but was sadly later pronounced dead. The scene is currently cordoned off while forensics are carried out and police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.

‘A 22-year-old man from Crawley, arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, remains in police custody at this stage.’

A post mortem examination was due to be carried out by a Home Office pathologist over the next couple of days and the man’s family informed of his death.

Crawley Borough Council runs the adventure park and states that is ‘perfect for play all year round’for families with children aged between eight years and 18 years.

‘Build your own den, there’s always lots of junk to use. If you are feeling more energetic have a game of table tennis. With lots of space for picnics you can bring the family, some lunch and plenty to drink and relax in the knowledge that they won’t get bored. Rain or shine, all year round there is something to do at Cherry Lane.’  

Bystanders said that an air ambulance arrived at the scene to assist paramedics who tried unsuccessfully for more than an hour to revive the victim who was later certified dead at the scene.
