A man is fighting for his life after being found floating-face down in the surf at Bondi Beach.

The 26-year-old man was found by surf lifesavers who pulled him from the water on the south side of the beach at about 5.15pm on Tuesday, 9 News reported.

He was given CPR at the scene and is now in a serious condition in hospital.

It is not clear why the man was in the water. 

New South Wales Police, which is investigating, warned people to stay out of the water during dangerous tides.

Rock fishers were also told to avoid coastal platforms and to take care when near the water’s edge.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a hazardous surf warning for swathes of the NSW coast on Tuesday, and the alerts are still in place today.
