Man and woman feared dead in Carwal Creek Bridge crash after car veers into a creek

An emergency rescue operation is underway to save two people feared dead after their car crashed into a creek.

The SUV crashed at Carwal Creek Bridge, south of the Mungindi near the border of NSW and Queensland, at about 1.15am on Sunday.

Friends travelling in another vehicle noticed the SUV was no longer following and returned to find the crash scene.

They were joined by a local property owner and helped a woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, out of the vehicle.

Emergency services airlifted her to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Two others passengers, understood to be a man and another woman, were unable to be retrieved.

NSW Police fear they both died after the vehicle quickly became submerged.

Police divers and crash investigators were travelling to the scene to join local police, ambulance and firefighters.
