Jonathan Anderson, 33, walked into a gym in Fremont, California during an exercise class when he allegedly pushed a woman to the floor before pulling off her clothes

A 33-year-old man from California has been arrested after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman at a gym.

Jonathan Anderson walked into the Fremont 24 Hour Fitness gym in Fremont near San Francisco where an exercise class was taking place.

The Fremont Police Department say that Anderson ‘entered the class’ without warning and walked up to a woman who was doing push-ups.

The 6ft 1in man who weighs 255lbs is alleged to have pushed the woman to the floor before attempting to sexually assault her and pulling off her clothes.

There were a number of other people working out in the gym at the time of the alleged attack.

One of them pulled Anderson off his victim and stood in between them to prevent any further assault from occurring.

Workers at the gym then blocked the man from leaving and held onto him until police arrived.

Anderson was arrested on charges of felony sexual battery and assault and is currently in custody.

He was found to be on probation as a result of two separate prior convictions.

Police say that Anderson confessed to the assault ‘in detail’.

‘The Fremont Police Department wishes to thank the Good Samaritan for intervening in the attack,’ Lieutenant Michael Tegner said in a statement.

‘Their quick action stopped this horrendous assault and aided in the suspect’s quick arrest. It took bravery and courage to intervene.’

Police believe that this was not the first assault Anderson may have committed and are hoping more people may come forward upon recognizing the suspect’s photograph.
