A 61-year-old man allegedly attempted to murder a woman by poisoning her tea with insecticide, in what police will claim was an attempted domestic violence-related killing.

Police say a 66-year-old woman became seriously ill after drinking tea that was allegedly prepared by a man she knew.

An investigation was launched last month, with 61-year-old Stephan Wagner arrested at his home in St Andrews, in Sydney’s southwest, at 11.35am on Tuesday.

He was taken to Campbelltown police station and charged with three domestic violence offences: causing poison to be taken with the intent to murder, using poison to endanger life, and using poison to inflict grievous bodily harm.

Police also seized a bottle of insecticide at the home, which has been sent for forensic testing.

Wagner was escorted out of his house by police in handcuffs, wearing cargo pants, a polo shirt and black runners.

He was denied bail and is set to appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday.
