Man charged with Gold Coast stabbing after boxing match

A shirtless man with blood pouring from his head was handcuffed and wheeled away by paramedics following a violent brawl at Surfers Paradise. 

A fight broke out Sunday afternoon following the McGregor Mayweather Fight of the Centruy which left one man stabbed in the neck.

Queensland Police said a 24-year-old Labrador man was charged after he allegedly stabbed a 29-year-old man in the neck with a knife who was later taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

The wild fight broke out at Surfers Paradise Beer Garden, leaving a 23-year-old man in hospital with minor head injuries. 

Footage shows a man covered in blood being taken away by paramedics as the huge crowd cheered.  

The 24-year-old Labrador man was charged with grievous bodily harm, possession of dangerous drugs and possessing utensils and will face Southport Magistrates Court Monday.

Witnesses said a man was glassed and stabbed in the neck at the tavern’s smoking area where another 20 to 30 people began ‘punching on’ shortly after the Fight of the Century ended, Gold Coast Bulletin reported. 

The bar was packed full of patrons watching the fight which spilled onto Cavill Avenue and Orchid Avenue at about 3.30pm, with witnesses claiming a security guard at the bar was ‘covered in blood’.

Inspector Jim Plowman told the publication the incident was ‘drunken thugs having a bit of a dust-up and that’s it’.

‘Once again, you’ve got people with alcohol involved not knowing what’s going on,’ he said.  

Emergency services were quick to attend, with dozens of police officers surrounding the bar, while a high-acuity unit was also called out.
