Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes became the latest elite footballer to reveal that he doesn’t watch matches away from work.

Nunes scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner against Aston Villa on Tuesday night, his best moment since signing for City from Wolves in 2023.

That goal takes Pep Guardiola’s side closer to qualifying for the Champions League once again and the manager admitted that he has been viewing the recent knockout games with envy.

Not Nunes though, who would rather stick on Netflix when relaxing in a bid to switch off. The likes of Ben White, Gareth Bale, Carlos Tevez and Benoit Assou-Ekotto have also had no problem acknowledging they have better things to do.

‘I don’t really watch football,’ the Portugal international said. ‘I just don’t watch football. It’s just because our daily routine is just full of football.

‘You know, it’s the same as if you work in a computer and you’re going home, you don’t want to go for the computer.’

Nunes, who has drawn praise from Guardiola for his adaptation to the unfamiliar right back role, also claimed that winning the FA Cup and reaching the Champions League would not constitute a successful season.

City face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, looking to reach a third consecutive final having climbed to third in the Premier League with four games left.

‘Of course not,’ he added. ‘We know this. The club’s standards are much higher than this. We know that these are not the standards we want this club to be at.

‘Especially for the guys that have been here longer, they’re always used to win and to fight for the title.

‘But this is our reality now and we have to accept it. And we just have to go for it like it’s the Champions League, the Premier League trophy.

‘This is a journey, it’s a rollercoaster and you have to be prepared for it. We now have a different aim than we had in the beginning of the season. The Champions League has to be our goal now and we’re going to go for it.’
