Man crashed his car into a power transformer at a train station

A man was trapped in his car for over two hours after he plunged his car into a power transformer at a train station.

It took emergency services over an hour to cut the power and release the driver at Broadmeadow train station near Newcastle around 9pm last night.

It is believed that the driver was not sober and speed was a factor in the crash.

The driver was travelling along a straight road, before coming to an ‘S bend’, where he didn’t turn and instead ‘plowed straight into the power transformer’ at the station.

As the driver came into contact with the security fence surrounding the power transformer, he hit it with so much force that the fence wrapped around the car.

After flying through the fence, he hit the transformer and was resting up against it.

Peter Lorimer was a witness at the scene, and managed to capture the horrific moment.

When Mr Lorimer asked emergency services why they took so long to get him out, they told him that they wanted to be assured the power was off and took precautions to ensure everyone’s safety.

Sydney Trains staff were there along with quite a few emergency services, who didn’t want to tamper with the car until the power was definitely off.

‘They used bolt cutters to cut through the fence as it was completely wrapped around the car,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

It is believed that the driver wasn’t sober at the time of the incident, and he kept wanting to light a cigarette whilst waiting in the car, but officers wouldn’t let him.

‘I’m pretty sure at one point he climbed into the back seat to sleep,’ Mr Lorimer said.

Mr Lorimer also said that he believes that speed would definitely have had to be a factor as there were no skid marks on the road.

‘If he would’ve been going, say 60, the fence would’ve easily stopped him,’ he said.

‘But he went through the security fence, which was wrapped around the whole car, and then he hit the transformer.’

Authorities ended up getting him out of the car two hours after the crash, before having him checked by paramedics and was then taken into custody.
