The cyclist was riding along Great North Road in Auckland about 8.30am on Tuesday when the ute driver turned left onto Ponsonby Road.

Despite attempting to be as visible as possible to the ute, the cyclist was taken down as the motorist indicated to turn left at the last minute.

According to the NZ Herald, the cyclist believed both he and the ute would head straight through the intersection.

However, footage of the incident captured on the cyclist’s helmet camera shows the ute making a last minute decision and choosing to turn left.

The ute quickly cuts across the cyclist, who can be seen colliding with the back of the vehicle before being thrown to the ground.

‘Hey! Oi! Get back here! I was right there, I’ve got you on camera… do you not look behind you before you make a turn?’ the cyclist can be heard asking.

The driver then tells the cyclist he looked but didn’t see him riding next to him in the bike lane before apologising profusely.

‘I did not see you, I am so so sorry,’ the motorist can be heard saying.

The cyclist said there could have been a chance to avoid the accident if the driver had indicated with enough time for him to pull back.

‘I positioned myself in his mirrors trying to be as visible as possible,’ he told the publication.

However, the cyclist said he was stunned when the driver said he didn’t see him at all in his mirrors.

‘More than being sorry, he said ‘I didn’t see you’, and he couldn’t believe he couldn’t see me. I was deliberately positioning myself in the most visible spot. It’s a bike lane, it’s obvious you’re turning across another lane,’ he said.

‘I think he’s learnt a lesson. We both got a fright. it was full-on. It would be great if people could watch the video and see how scary and unpredictable riding in traffic can be and adjusting their behaviour before having to hit someone to get the wakeup call they need.’

The cyclist suffered bruising and grazing from the fall but is otherwise okay following the crash.
