Detective Chief Inspector Mark Tivendale said: ‘The incident happened in a busy bar in the centre of Liverpool and would’ve been witnessed by many people. Our investigation is in it’s very early stages but we believe an altercation has taken place inside the bar between the victim and a number of unknown males.

‘I’d appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the assault, or the events leading up to it, to get in touch with us. I’d also like to appeal for anyone who may have mobile phone footage or photographs from within the Maya bar to come forward.

‘You may have heard words being exchanged or witnessed the offenders leaving the bar. Any information could prove vital to our investigation and to identifying who was responsible and bringing them to justice.
