Man dies after being hit by a bus carrying school children as police investigate horror rush-hour crash

A man has died after being hit by a bus carrying school children in a rush-hour horror crash this morning.

Shocked locals watched as around a dozen police cars, plus fire engines and ambulances, surrounded the scene.

The crash happened just after 8am on Lord Street, a main road through Southport town centre, close to the town hall. 

Police investigators were seen going inside the vehicle to take photographs and, according to one resident, a number of schoolchildren who were on the bus spoke with officers after the crash.

Emergency services attended and Lord Street is set to remain closed throughout the day as investigations continue.

Confirming the tragic news, a Merseyside Police spokesman said: ‘We are appealing for information following a fatal collision in Southport this morning.

‘A report was received shortly after 8.10am that a collision involving a bus and a male pedestrian had happened on Lord Street.

‘Police, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service attended and the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.’

Efforts are ongoing to identify the man and inform his next of kin.

A section of Lord Street is closed in both directions from its junction with Eastbank Street to the fire station roundabout. 

One resident said: ‘I feel sorry for all the school kids that were on the bus.’
