A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was rescued from the surf at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.

The man, believed to be aged in his 60s, was pulled out of the water by lifesavers who performed CPR on him after he was spotted in distress on Monday afternoon.

He is thought have suffered a cardiac arrest before he was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

‘We could suggest that the man’s injuries were caused by the man being upended by a shore break and quite possibly landed on his head,’ police said at the scene.

‘That’s the reason for the cardiac arrest. He’s also been treated for spinal injuries, but there’s no indication at the stage.’

Pictures of the scene showed crowds of beachgoers watching as lifesavers treated the man, before he was rushed to hospital via ambulance.

More to come.
