A man has suffered serious injuries to both of his legs after he became trapped in a meat grinder for more than two-and-a-half hours in regional New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to an abattoir in Young, in southwestern NSW at about 9.30 on Wednesday morning to tend to the man aged in his 30s.

Two ambulances, a rescue helicopter, critical care paramedics and a doctor were all called to the scene where paramedics and firefighters worked to free the man from the meat auger.

The man suffered significant injuries to his legs and was placed in an induced coma and flown to the Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Stephen Pollard said the task of freeing the man was highly complicated.

‘It must have been really hard for the patient who was in a fair bit of pain before paramedics arrived. We gave him some relief and then began the task of getting him free,’ he said.

‘It was a particularly delicate and protracted incident to free the man from the machinery which was about 5 metres off the ground on a platform.

‘He was stuck for a long time but his colleagues were there with him throughout providing physical and mental support. They did a great job.’

More to come.
