Man in his 20s becomes the second man to be shot dead in London in less than 48 hours as the capital’s 2019 murder toll reaches 70

A man in his 20s was shot dead in east London in the early hours of this morning, the second man to be gunned down in the capital in less than 48 hours.  

The man was shot and killed in Leyton, east London, at roughly 3am today.

The incident brings the capital’s murder toll to 70 so far this year. 

A spokesman for the Metropolitan police said:  ‘Next of kin are yet to be informed. Formal identification has not taken place.

‘A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

‘A second man, aged in his 20s, is being treated at an east London hospital for non-life threatening injuries.’

The incident follows a similar shooting on Friday where a victim, who police believe was aged in his mid-20s, was found suffering gunshot wounds in Harrow Road in Wembley shortly after 8pm.

He was taken to hospital where he later died..

No-one has been arrested. Police said there will be an enhanced police presence in the area.

A spokesperson for the Met said: ‘Police were called to Harrow Road, HA9 at 20:10hrs on Friday, 5 July following reports of a shooting.

‘Local officers and armed police attended along with London Ambulance Service and found a man believed to be aged in his mid-twenties suffering from critical gunshot injuries.

‘He was taken to a north London hospital but died a short while later. His next of kin have now been informed.

‘A post-mortem examination will be held in due course. Formal identification awaits.

‘A crime scene remains in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

‘Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command will be investigating in close partnership with police in Brent.

‘No arrests have been made. Inquiries continue. Local residents can expect an enhanced police presence in the area.

‘Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call police on 101 quoting CAD 9128/5July or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555 111.
