An Illinois man was arrested for drunk driving early Sunday morning after authorities said he wrecked his car on a highway in Iowa before climbing out of the totaled vehicle with a beer in his hand.

David Alexander Axnix, 31, of Rock Island, Illinois, was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence after the incident, according to the Iowa City Press-Citizen.

A Johnson County Sheriff deputy said the potentially deadly collision occurred around 1am Sunday near mile marker 89 on US 219 in Iowa City, Iowa.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Axnix driving 100mph on the highway, sideswiping a semi-truck and forcing other cars off the road before crashing into a ditch.

The allegedly intoxicated Axnix somehow managed to climb out of the crash with a beer still in his hand, according to a deputy’s report obtained by the Press-Citizen, which said the 31-year-old was walking ‘dangerously close to southbound traffic’ after the crash.
