Man is killed after car crashes into pedestrian during police pursuit

A man has died after a car crashed during a high-speed police pursuit.

Greater Manchester Police are hunting a man who fled the scene of the collision – which happened in the town of Denton in Greater Manchester at about 12.45pm today.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said that it had been called to an incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. However, they refused to confirm whether it was the pedestrian that had been killed.

A man and woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Officers had tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle however the driver failed to stop.

Police gave chase and, during a short pursuit, the suspicious vehicle collided with several other cars on St Lawrence Road, a spokesperson said.

A man died at the scene.

The force has not confirmed whether the man who died had been in one of the vehicles involved in the collision.

An air ambulance was called to the scene and the road has been cordoned off, reports the Manchester Evening News. 

A man and woman who were in the car were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving while another man ran from the scene.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward. 

Chief Superintendent Neil Evans said: ‘We have launched an investigation into this incident as a man has very sadly lost his life and I would like to appeal to anyone who saw the collision or knows the identity or whereabouts of the man who ran from the car to contact us.

‘This is a truly tragic incident and our thoughts are with this man’s family at this unimaginably difficult time.’

The incident has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC).
