A man has shared his shock after he almost ruined his white trainers by stepping on a melted road during the heatwave.

Posting on TikTok, user Tommy @tmd_2003, from Ipswich, shared the clip amid soaring temperatures yesterday.

He was walking along the road in white Air Force 1 trainers, completely oblivious to the fact that he was about to step on black goo.

Luckily he noticed just in time and decided to investigate the scene further, zooming in on the substance and poking at it with a stick.

The ‘goo’ was actually melted tarmac and was caused by the road burning up and disintegrating in the extreme heat.

For many, it underlined the reality of heatwaves and the fact that the UK infrastructure is not built for them.

Meanwhile a third commenter said: ‘And I’ve seen people walking their dogs.’

A separate person wrote: ‘And people are saying UK’s being dramatic. The UK is not built for this heat. The country will melt.’

Another person penned: ‘Imagine getting your Diors in that. I would start crying.’

Someone else said: ‘The tar in the road surface begins to melt at around 50C. Sad thing is people still take their dogs out in this heat!!!’

It came after Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said there is a long process ahead to upgrade and improve infrastructure for future heatwaves.

There were train cancellations, speed restrictions and mayhem across the country because of the sizzling temperatures.

Flights ground to a halt and an airport runway also melted in the extreme heat which caused further travel chaos.

People opted for unusual ways to cool down – including climbing into wheelie bins and skips for bracing icy dips.
