A man has been shot in the leg and another has been bashed over the head with a glass bottle during a violent home invasion in northern New South Wales.

A desperate manhunt is underway for three thieves armed with a sawn-off rifle and knives, who stormed their way into a Lismore unit about 11pm on Friday, in what police believe was a targeted attack. 

Police said the trio threatened five people inside the Airforce Road home, demanding cash, wallets and mobile phones as they ransacked the room.

The two male victims, 46 and 30, were taken to Lismore Base Hospital, where they remain in a stable condition. 

Their injuries are not considered life threatening.

Detectives spent much of Saturday at the unit complex, and are asking for public assistance in finding three men who may be able to assist with inquiries.

‘It’s very concerning that there are three offenders on the street with a firearm,’ Chief Inspector Nicole Bruce told reporters. 

The men are described as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander, aged in their late teens to early 20s, wearing dark clothing and with their faces covered.
