Man to face Cairns court on stepdaughter sex charges

A man who allegedly repeatedly raped and indecently treated his stepdaughter over 12 years, from when she was six-years-old, is facing 33 historic sex charges.

The 46-year-old, who can’t be named, stands accused of nine counts of rape, and more than a dozen counts of indecent dealings and treatment.

His alleged crimes include showing the girl pornographic films, and 11 of the charges were from before she turned 12, Cairns Post reported.

The man became her stepfather when she was aged two, and allegedly began abusing her when she turned six in 1996.

His alleged offending took place in both Gordonvale and Cairns, in Queensland’s far north, until she was 18 in 2008.

He was arrested in Cairns on Tuesday after the alleged victim – as an adult – came to Townsville Police and told them of her alleged abuse.

The man is due to face the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 25.

Townsville police acting detective inspector Dave Miles said the alleged crimes were eventually reported once the woman felt supported.

‘This is a matter of historical offence has been reported to us when the victim has been supported and come forward to police,’ he said.

‘Victims speak to us in their own time and the nature of the investigations are that they are detailed and complex, but we continue to pursue them with the sole intention of placing perpetrators before the court.

‘Police will allege he has utilised a position of trust to violate a child in his care over a long period of time.’

The man was released on bail to appear in court later this month.
