Lisandro Martinez has dealt Manchester United a fresh injury blow after limping off in Manchester United’s win over West Ham, much to the dismay of the club’s fans.

The Argentine defender only returned to first-team action earlier this month following a foot injury, but could be set for a further spell on the sidelines.

Martinez appeared to injure his knee after tangling for the ball with Hammers’ Vladimir Coufal.

The defender remained on the floor, surrounded by team-mates who seemed concerned over the challenge and Martinez’s apparent injury.

He tried to play on following the collision, but then hit the ground minutes later and was quickly replaced by Raphael Varane before trudging down the touchline in discomfort.

His injury is a big blow for United, and fans quickly took to social media to share their disappointment at possibly losing the defender for another extended period of time.

‘Martinez injured. The season is completely done man if it weren’t already. One fan wrote in dismay. While another stated ‘Martinez being injured scares me.’

Others felt pain theirselves on seeing the injury, with one stating ‘I feel sick. I hope Martinez gets well fast’ and another offering up their own limb by saying ‘Martinez can take my knee if he needs one.’

One did try and stay tongue-in-cheek with their post by writing ‘Can see the concern for Martinez there. We are nothing without him lol’. But the desperation in the post was for all to see.

Sports Mail reporter Chris Wheeler confirmed the discomfort Martinez was in as he left the pitch, while also noting the West Ham fans sympathy for the Argentine international.

Wheeler wrote: ‘Martinez isn’t as ok as he – or we – thought. He goes to ground again in some distress and is immediately replaced by Varane. Chants of ‘let him die’ from the West Ham fans met by a chant of ‘Argentina’ from the home supporters.

The injury was the only blot on an afternoon where United put on one of their best performances of the season, beating West Ham 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Birthday boy Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for Erik ten Hag’s side before a brace from Alejandro Garnacho either side of the break wrapped up all three points.
