Manchester United supporters were quick to heap praise on Wout Weghorst as the Dutch striker scored at the death in the Netherlands’ opening Euro 2024 match against Poland in Germany.

Ronald Koeman’s side looked set for a 1-1 draw before Weghorst marked his introduction in the 81st minute by scoring just two minute after coming off the bench with a typical poachers goal.

Weghorst previously spent half of the 2022/23 Premier Leagueย season on-loan at United and is fondly remembered by fans of the Old Trafford club who hailed his match-winning goal.

The 31-year-old was in the right place at the right time as a ball was rolled into the box and perfectly-placed for Weghorst to smash his effort first-time past stranded Polish goalkeeperย Wojciech Szczesny.

The veteran striker – who still holds a contract with Burnley – was an image of pure joy as he proved Koeman made the correct choice in deciding to put him on in place of Memphis Depay who struggled to threaten Poland’s goal.ย
