No matter how many years pass, Manchester United fans will simply never let Chelsea fans forget the moment John Terry slipped taking a penalty in the Champions League final.

The two Premier League rivals met in Moscow for the European Cup final and with the game to be settled on penalties, Chelsea captain Terry had the definitive say… for all the wrong reasons.

And on the 11th anniversary of United’s Champions League final success over Chelsea, the club’s fans were gleeful on Tuesday as they recalled Terry’s infamous slip.

The game was closely fought with Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener cancelled out by Chelsea stalwart Frank Lampard.

And when the match could not be settled with the addition of extra-time, it went to penalties, where Terry had a moment that would become defining.

United took first but soon fell behind in the shootout when Ronaldo missed the third spot kick after Carlos Tevez and Michael Carrick netted United’s first two.

With Michael Ballack, Juliano Belletti, Lampard and Ashley Cole converting Chelsea’s first four, Terry stepped up as the fifth taker and knew if he scored, the Blues were Champions League victors.

But Terry failed to seize the moment, slipping moments before connecting as his shot sprayed wide, to the delight of United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Anderson and Ryan Giggs soon converted for United and when Nicholas Anelka missed, the tears flowed for Terry and Co.

One United fan wrote: ’11 years ago today; John Terry changed the penalty order so he could take the match-winning penalty in a Champions League final only to slip, miss, lose, and sob his eyes out. Viva John Terry.’

Another added: ‘The most iconic meme before memes were a thing’ with the addition of a laughing emoji, just to add insult to injury.

‘You love to see it,’ was the take of one United fan, keen to relive the moment with his followers.

Thankfully, for Chelsea and Terry, he found himself on the right side of a European Cup penalty shootout four years later when Roberto di Matteo guided the Blues to glory out in Munich.

Nothing will see Terry escape annual reminders about his horror show in Moscow, though.
