Man United flop Donny van de Beek ‘offered to Jose Mourinho’s Roma’

Man United flop Donny van de Beek ‘offered to Jose Mourinho’s Roma’ as Erik ten Hag continues his squad clear-out… with the Dutch midfielder working his way back from knee injury

  • Van de Beek, 26, has reportedly been offered to Roma as he seeks fresh start
  • Dutch midfielder’s career at United never really got going after £35m signing
  • He suffered a serious knee injury in January and missed second half of season

Roma have reportedly been offered Manchester United misfit Donny van de Beek as Erik ten Hag continues to trim his squad and raise funds for summer signings.

The Netherlands international midfielder, 26, has never got going at Old Trafford since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer signed him from Ajax for £35million in 2020.

Van de Beek has played a bit-part role and spent time out on loan at Everton in the 2021-22 season, where he also failed to make much impact.

Even a reunion with his former Ajax coach Ten Hag didn’t bring a change of fortunes with precious little game time before a serious knee injury ruled him out of the second half of 2022-23.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Jose Mourinho’s Roma have been offered the chance to sign Van de Beek, who United appear to want out this summer despite the two years remaining on his contract.

Reports say Van de Beek isn’t a priority at the moment for the Giallorossi but the possibility of a loan move could be explored if the Dutchman doesn’t find another club.

Chris Smalling and Nemanja Matic are other former United players currently at Roma, led by their former manager Mourinho.

Roma, who lost the Europa League final to Sevilla last month, have already signed Houssem Aouar from Lyon and Evan Ndicka from Eintracht Frankfurt on free transfers as they build for next season.

Van de Beek started ball work at United’s training ground three weeks ago as he recovers from the knee injury which happened when Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi tackled him in the game on January 3.

The midfielder is hoping to be fully fit in time for pre-season but it remains to be seen where he will be playing.

Van de Beek may not be the only United midfielder on the way out this summer, with Fred interesting Fulham and Scott McTominay potentially being offered to West Ham as part-exchange for Declan Rice.
