Marcus Rashford can leave Manchester United for £40million this summer, but Aston Villa do not have first option on the England star.

Villa signed Rashford on loan for the rest of the season in January, and can make the deal permanent for £40m when it runs out at the end of next month.

But it’s understood there is nothing to stop other clubs buying him for the same price if United and the player agree to the move.

Rashford is under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, and as it stands is planning to return to Carrington for pre-season training at the start of July.

However, it seems unlikely that he will play for United again while Ruben Amorim remains as head coach, and a move away from his boyhood club would be in the best interests of all parties.

If United don’t take the 27-year-old back, they will have to find a club that can afford his £315,000-a-week wages.

Villa are said to be covering a minimum of 75 per cent of Rashford’s salary while he is on loan with them, and United would have to make up the shortfall if he joins another club on less money. Sources close to the player indicate that he would not be willing to take a pay-cut.

That could run into millions over the remaining three years of his contract, which would then be deducted from his transfer fee.

The possibility of another loan deal cannot be ruled out if United fail to find a more permanent solution this summer.

Rashford would have to agree to any move and has already made it clear that he wants to join a Champions League club and is reluctant to join a club in London.

He has earned an England recall on the back of his improved form since leaving United for Villa, contributing four goals and six assists in 17 appearances for Unai Emery’s side.

However, Rashford has played his last game on loan at Villa after it was confirmed that the hamstring injury that has caused him to miss the last three matches will also keep him out of Friday’s game against Tottenham. He is ineligible for the final game of the season away to United at Old Trafford.
