Manchester United have opened talks over a long-term new deal for right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Mail Sport reported last month how United intended to step up talks with the full-back’s representatives after his remarkable turn around under Erik ten Hag.

Wan-Bissaka’s current deal expires next summer, though there is an option to extend that by 12 months.

But United are now eager to see that contract, which was signed in 2019 when he joined from Crystal Palace, extended, with an increase on his £100,000 a week wages expected.

With the summer transfer window closed talks with Wan-Bissaka’s representatives have now come into focus and a new deal would be reward for a player that looked to be heading for the exit in the first few months of Ten Hag’s reign.

The club were even open to selling the defender, with Crystal Palace at the front of the queue to re-sign the full-back.

But Wan-Bissaka became a key player for Ten Hag during the second half of the season as United won the EFL Cup and qualified for the Champions League.

And a new deal for the defender would seal Wan-Bissaka’s return to prominence at United.

Wan-Bissaka now has the starting right back berth and it was his assist for Raphael Varane that got United the win in their 1-0 season opener against Wolves.

Back in May, Ten Hag was full of praise for Wan-BIssaka’s improvement in recent months.

‘He has improved a lot, as many players have improved during the season,’ he told ManUtd.com.

‘That’s one of the jobs for a manager and the coaching staff, to get that done and we are really happy with it, that players are developing.

‘Always the team spirit is the base and if players understand that, if they can set their egos aside, then you will see that the team develops and progresses.

‘And then within the team’s progress, individuals make a lot of progress and Aaron is definitely one of them.’
