Man United owner Avram Glazer turns up at club’s training camp in the US as frustration over takeover saga grows… with much-maligned American also set to watch friendly against Arsenal

  • Erik ten Hag told the media he would happily advise on the takeover saga
  • There is still no clarity around the sale of the club eight months into the affair

Avram Glazer has turned up at Manchester United’s training camp in New Jersey amid growing frustration and uncertainty over the sale of the club.

Glazer has been the most visible member of the family, appearing at the finals of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup last season as well as the Women’s FA Cup final. He is expected at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday night to see United’s opening tour game against Arsenal.

Glazer and his wife Jill briefly met with manager Erik ten Hag before watching United’s training session at Pingry School on Thursday. The two men only spoke briefly but Ten Hag told the media that he would be happy to give his ‘advice and recommendations’ to the owners over the takeover saga.

Eight months after the Glazers said they would explore ‘strategic alternatives’, there is still no clarity over whether they will sell the club after offers between £5-6billion came in from a Qatar group led by Sheikh Jassim and British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The main problem is believed to an ongoing disagreement between United’s co-chairmen Avram and Joel Glazer, who want to stay in power, and the other four siblings – Edward, Kevin, Bryan and Darcie – who would rather sell up.

This fundamental issue is said to have been apparent from the start of the strategic review in November and has made life difficult for Raine, the US bank handling the process.

Financial sources in the US say that it should normally take between 60 and 90 days, and there is unease at Raine that the company has been asked to sell something that isn’t actually for sale.

‘The Glazers don’t give a f***,’ said one insider. ‘United are like a piece of fine artwork in a freeport. The owner only sees the value, not the beauty.’

Meanwhile, Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe have been left hanging on. The sheikh made his fifth and final bid last month while sources close to Ratcliffe say he is prepared to wait it out.
