  • Greenwood described him as a ‘good defender’ and my ‘toughest challenge’

Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has revealed the toughest opponent he’s faced so far in his career – and it isn’t anywhere close to what you were expecting.

The 19-year-old forward has come up against the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig, AC Milan and Sevilla in his fledgling career – not to mention the Premier League heavyweights.

That’s seen Greenwood pit his skill and pace against some of the best defenders in world football.

But when asked in a Q&A session with fans which opponent has caused him the most frustration, Greenwood certainly raised a few eyebrows.

‘I’ve probably got to say, it might be a surprising one, but do you know [Joe] Bryan, the one for Fulham,’ he said in response to the question from Philip L in Norway on the club’s official website.

‘He allowed me no space, no time on the ball, when we played them home and away. It was one of my most difficult games for us.

‘He’s one you probably wouldn’t think I’d say his name but he was getting tight to me and not giving me much space.

‘He was a good defender and he was probably my toughest challenge.’

Greenwood came into direct competition with Fulham left-back Bryan, 27, when United edged a 2-1 win at Craven Cottage on January 20 this year.

United actually fell behind against a Fulham side occupying a relegation place when Ademola Lookman scored after five minutes.

But they rallied, equalising through Edinson Cavani before Paul Pogba curled home the winner with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side leading the Premier League at that point.

And Greenwood had another tussle with Bryan when Fulham drew 1-1 at Old Trafford in the reverse fixture on May 18.

Cavani handed United the lead with a stunning 40-yard lob of Alphonse Areola but it was Bryan who equalised 14 minutes from time to earn Fulham a point.

They won’t come up against once another in the season ahead with Fulham relegated back to the Championship.

Greenwood has made an impressive start to his Old Trafford career, scoring 29 goals in 105 appearances since making his competitive debut against PSG at the age of just 17 years and 156 days in March 2019.
