Manchester United’s deputy football director, Andy O’Boyle, is set to leave the club after two-years in his position, according to reports.

The Old Trafford-based side have been busy making changes both on and off the pitch throughout the summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS team took sporting control.

O’Boyle was tasked with helping find ways to improve the men’s, women’s and academy teams at United, but will now leave the club in search of other opportunities, as reported by The Athletic.

The Northern Irishman originally started his coaching career at United, working with the youth team for a brief spell in 2006 before later taking up stints at Wrexham, Coventry, Liverpool and England’s Under-21 side.

He is believed to have been having an influencing say on United’s recent recruitment that saw Erik ten Hag boosted with the arrival of five new signings that cost over a combined £200m.

United also saw an improvement in their selling capabilities with deals struck for a number of first-team stars to leave – most notably Scott McTominay’s £25.7m move to Napoli.

O’Boyle departs the 13-time Premier League champions as a highly-regarded professional and is likely going to be the subject of interest from several top European sides.

He was previously given more responsibility following the exit of former director of football, John Murtough, who was one of the victims of INEOS’ club-wide staff shakeup.

The decision to step away from United coincides with a period of change that has seen the club appoint a new chief executive, sporting director and technical director in a bid to force improvements.

Meanwhile, he leaves a United side that has endured a miserable start to their Premier League campaign, with the weekend’s 3-0 defeat against rivals Liverpool seeing them manage just three points in their opening three matches.

Ten Hag is already facing increased scrutiny in his role after appearing to rescue his career by beating derby rivals Man City to win the FA Cup last season.

United will return to Premier League action after the international break when they travel to face Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday, September 14.
