A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed the man had suffered a medical episode.
He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with a serious head injury.
‘The fella was lying in the gutter and there were marks on stomach,’ Paramedic Greg Jones told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
‘He had a head injury, he had a big whack on the back of the head. The man had two seizures with us, but his level of consciousness has recovered. Hopefully he’ll be all right.’
Items left along the roadside including a long sleeved shirt with blood stains, a travel suitcase, a helmet and lighter were assessed by Forensic police.
A woman, believed to be a member of the victim’s family, attended the scene and picked up the travel luggage, with gloves on, and took the bag away in her car.

He said the man’s legs were moving as he lay on the road, close to the gutter, and believes he may have hit his head on the stormwater drain.
‘Paramedics took his shoes off, he was well served by people there. There were about five ambulances. They got a board underneath him.’
