Outside court, Britton’s lawyer Adam Magill said his client was shocked to have been arrested and denied the allegations against him.

‘He’s fairly distressed,’ he said.

‘He’s strenuously denying the matter, the matter will be challenged.’

Mr Magill said Britton had been living in South Australia where he had been doing odd jobs.

‘He’s been estranged from his family for the past 17 years so he’s had no communications and something like this has just come out of the blue,’ he said.

Ms Britton was last seen on March 6, 1996, but her body was not found until the next day.

Queensland police on Thursday appealed to the public to come forward with further information relating to the murder.

‘Detectives believe that there are more people who may have spoken with the suspect over the years and who still have information about this tragic murder,’ he said.

‘The door is never shut, we still want people to contact police’.’

The case will return to court on July 16.
