David Zlatanovic tried to attack a police dog named Chyna during his arrest in 2015
A man who assaulted four officers and a police dog named Chyna will spend at least a year in prison despite pleading not guilty to the charges.
Police attempted to arrest David Dragomir Dragan Zlatanovic at the home of his ex-partner in April 2015 for outstanding warrants and defying an apprehended violence order.
But Zlatanovic denied doing anything wrong during the mele, during which he attacked officers with timber paling and attempted to grab Chyna by the muzzle and gouge out her eyes.
He was convicted on nine charges linked to the brawl, including one charge of animal cruelty against the police animal.
Zlatanovic, who is already in prison, showed no emotion when he heard the verdict by video link on Friday.

‘The police who attended … were entitled to arrest the defendant. They were simply doing their job on the day in question,’ Magistrate Cate Follent said, according to the Illawarra Mercury.
‘They are entitled to go about their work without being subjected to the type of gratuitous violence to which they were exposed due to [Zlatanovic’s] actions.’
In court, officers recounted the evening of April 9, 2015, saying that Zlatanovic his his hands behind his back before brandishing a wooden paling and throwing a DVD player at them.
He was sentenced to a total prison term of 18 months, with a non-parole period of 13 months. He may become eligible for parole from March 2019, but is expected to be serving further prison time for unrelated offences.
According to the evidence, police attempted to subdue him with OC spray and taser barbs, at which point be lunged at Chyna and tried to pull her towards him. He was forced to release the animal after her handler struck him repeatedly in the head.
