Man who struck pedestrian said he had nowhere else to go

  • Julian Fry veered from the road and onto a footpath in Adelaide’s north last year
  • Footage of the incident shows his vehicle careering towards the man
  • Fry said he had no choice but to hit the pedestrian
  • He said his victim should feel grateful it wasn’t much worse for either of them

An Adelaide man who swerved off a road and slammed into a pedestrian at speed has shown little remorse for his actions, instead blaming the crash on the victim.

Julian Fry veered from the road and onto a footpath in what he claimed to be an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian in July last year, Nine News reported.

But horrifying footage of the incident appears to show the 53-year-old careering his vehicle intentionally towards the unsuspecting man, who sprinted in an effort to avoid being hit.

Julian Fry (pictured) said he had no option but to veer from the road and onto a footpath into a pedestrian on Elizabeth Way in Adelaide’s North last year

The shocking impact occurred on Elizabeth Way, in the north of the city, with Fry saying he ‘had nowhere else to go’ but directly towards the pedestrian.

‘I had a tree in front of me and a pedestrian running in front of me. It’s a driver’s worst nightmare,’ Fry said.

He appeared in court on Wednesday and asked the magistrate for legal aid representation to help defend careless driving charges.

‘Anyone else could have been in that same position and the same thing would have happened,’ Fry said.

Adamant he was not at fault, he explained the 38-year-old pedestrian should thank his lucky stars the outcome wasn’t any worse.

‘He was very lucky that that did not come out much worse for either of us,’ he said.

The Elizabeth Downs resident wants to fight the charges of driving without due care, which attracts a fine and a loss of three demerits point.

He said he felt no responsibility for the victim’s injuries and given the chance he would ask him why he wasn’t paying more attention to the road.
