Man writes off uncle’s Ferrari after driving while high

A driver had a real-life Ferris Bueller moment when he wrote off his uncle’s £180,000 Ferrari after taking it for a spin while high on cannabis.

Naeem Patel, 28, of Bolton, Greater Manchester, crashed the Ferrari 458 Spider – which has top speeds of around 199mph – the day after he had borrowed it from his uncle to attend a social event.

Pictures capture the remains of the 3.4 seconds 0-62mph supercar which had extensive damage to the right side after Patel wrapped it around a lamppost.

Police say the driver lost control along Beaumont Road near to the Britannia Hotel in Bolton just before 2pm on November 25 last year.

At the scene officers discovered Patel smelled slightly of cannabis and his eyes were bloodshot.

A roadside swab confirmed Patel had been using cannabis which he admitted he smoked to relax him, a court heard.

Patel pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified drug above the specified limit and was fined £400 and banned from driving for 12 months by Bolton magistrates.

Prosecuting, Beth Pilling said the vehicle had suffered extensive damage along one side.

A group of men was standing nearby and, when approached by officers, Patel immediately identified himself as the driver.

‘The officers noticed he smelled slightly of cannabis and his eyes were bloodshot,’ said Ms Pilling.

Defending, Shahid Ali said: ‘It is safe to say he (the uncle) was not best pleased.’

Mr Ali stressed Patel is of good character with no previous convictions and is remorseful.

‘He is not one to mess about with the system. He accepts what he did. It is quite clear that a disqualification is going to create havoc with regard to his personal and family life.’

He added that the defendant had only driven 1,000 yards when the accident happened and appealed to magistrates not to impose a lengthy driving ban.

The court heard Patel is due to be married in the near future and his bride’s family lives in southern England and, for work, he may have to rely on public transport to attend meetings.

As well as the fine and driving ban, Patel was also ordered to pay £85 towards prosecution costs and a £40 victim surcharge.
