Oleksandr Zinchenko has undergone knee surgery in Barcelona to further add to Manchester City’s current defensive woes.

The 22-year-old full back had missed the recent Champions League clash against Atalanta in mid-week, and City soon confirmed that a knee injury was the reason behind his setback.

Renowned doctor Ramon Cugat is likely to have overseen the procedure, although the expected length of the Ukrainian’s absence is currently unknown.

Zinchenko had also been left out of Pep Guardiola’s squad that recorded a crucial victory against Crystal Palace last weekend, although the top flight champions had attributed that to illness.

And the former Shakhtar Donetsk youngster on Friday posted a photo from his hospital bed in Barcelona, with the caption: ‘On the way back’.

The post had been tagged with the location as Barcelona, which is where City often send their injured players to undergo surgery with Cugat.

Benjamin Mendy, Aymeric Laporte, Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan have all travelled to the Spanish city after sustaining knee injuries.

But it remains unclear how long Zinchenko will now be sidelined following his surgery, leaving City firmly in the midst of a defensive injury crisis.

The club fear Rodri, signed from Atletico Madrid in the summer, could be ruled out for a month after the stand-in centre half picked up a suspected hamstring injury against Atalanta.

Laporte had underwent surgery on a knee problem in September, after the French centre half was stretchered off against Brighton, and occasional partner Nicolas Otamendi also missed City’s trip to Selhurst Park after battling against back pain.
