  • Pep Guardiola has entered the last 16 months of his Manchester City contract
  • The Spaniard has been at City for longer than he was at Barcelona and Bayern
  • There is a feeling at the Etihad that Guardiola will extend his stay in England
  • He has won 10 major trophies at City in six years and could lift more this season

Manchester City players reportedly expect Pep Guardiola to commit his future to the club and extend his stay in the Premier League beyond next season.

The Spaniard’s contract has just 16 months left to run and speculation over his future has grown of late, particularly given he has previously been reluctant to remain at the same club for long spells.

Guardiola spent four and three seasons at Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively and he will have been at City six years by the end of the season.

According to sources close to the The Mirror, however, there is a feeling at the Etihad that Guardiola ‘can’t walk away’ after building a team ‘that can continue to dominate for years.’

City have moved to tie several of their stars to long-term contracts to ensure the core of their squad is kept intact.

This week, Joao Cancelo penned a new contract extension that will keep him at the Etihad through to 2027. Jack Grealish and Ruben Dias’s deals are also due to expire in the same year.

Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ameyric Laporte are all on the books until 2025 at least, while Ederson and John Stones are under contract through to the end of the 2026 season.

Promising youngsters such as Liam Delap, James McAtee and Cole Palmer have also signed extensions to 2026.

Guardiola has won 10 major trophies since replacing Manuel Pellegrini in charge of City six years ago and looks poised to lift more silverware this season with his team still in contention on three different fronts.

City are nine points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table and are heavy favourites to win a second consecutive title and a fourth in five years.

On Saturday, meanwhile, the Premier League champions reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for the seventh consecutive season after a comprehensive 4-1 win over Championship pace-setters Fulham.

Later this month, City’s quest for an elusive first Champions League crown will resume when they take on Sporting in Lisbon in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.
