Manchester driver ploughs into crowds at Harpurhey shopping centre

Six people have been injured after a car was driven into a crowd of people at a shopping centre in north Manchester.

Emergency services were called to the Asda at Harpurhey shopping centre just before 3.30pm today after reports that a car had collided with people and two vehicles.

An 80-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

According to police the incident is not terror-related.

Six people were confirmed injured, some of whom had suffered ‘major trauma’ injuries. One of the injured was the arrested driver who was taken into police custody.

Five other injured people – said to be all adults – were taken to hospital. 

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) described four of them as ‘walking wounded’.

Two others suffered leg injuries, the extent of which are not yet known.

Witnesses said ambulances were scrambled to the scene, as well as police.

The air ambulance has also been called.

An NWAS spokesman said: ‘We were called to Lee Road at 3.25pm to reports that a car had collided with six pedestrians.

‘We have a number of resources at the scene, including six ambulances and two senior clinicians.

‘There are four walking wounded, two others have leg injuries.’

The service later tweeted: ‘Our crews were called to a large scale incident in Harpurhey, Manchester at 15:25pm.

‘We’ve had six ambulances at the scene along with the air ambulance and three senior clinicians. Six patients are being treated for serious injuries after a collision with a vehicle.’

In a statement, Greater Manchester said: ‘Shortly before 3.30pm today (Monday 16 April 2018), police were called to reports that a Kia Venga had been involved in a collision with two cars and a number of pedestrians at a car park in a supermarket in Harpurhey.

‘Five pedestrians have been taken to hospital for treatment. An 80-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

‘Enquiries into the full circumstances around this incident are ongoing.’
