Manchester Piccadilly closed due to anti-Turkey protesters on tracks

Manchester’s main railway station has been closed after anti-Turkey protesters climbed on to the tracks leaving airport-bound travellers stranded.

Protesters have been photographed at Manchester Piccadilly waving Kurdish flags and signs saying ‘Stop Turkey from helping ISIS terrorists’.

One Twitter user claimed he had seen children and their mothers who were unable to catch a train to the airport in tears on the platform.

The protest began at around 1.30pm but National Rail have said services are likely to be delayed until at least half four this afternoon.

Manchester Piccadilly was closed earlier today after anti-Turkey protesters climbed on to the tracks. It is not expected to reopen until at least 4.30pm

The National Rail Twitter account wrote: ‘The station has been closed due to a protest gathering. 

‘Protesters are on the tracks at the station and attempting to climb overhead line equipment.’

British Transport Police have also confirmed on Twitter that officers were at the scene.

They wrote: ‘Officers are on the scene @NetworkRailMAN responding to an ongoing trespass incident. The station is closed. More info when we have it.’
